Beyond Language, Teaching, and A Great Equal Opportunity
By Noor Amalia Utami
A private English Teacher in LBK Sahabat Bahasa
Raised
and grew in a family which most of my relatives are teachers, lectures
and educators, I knew that education is important. I knew that I wanted
to be a teacher.
Teaching
language is always be my passion since high school and English was my
choice. With language, someone can change his/her life. Or even an
entire community. Language is a powerful tool to survive and a
distinctive key to differentiate us with any other species.
Learning
language is started with a phoneme acquisition. By sound, we will
understand word and discourses. But, my question is what about those
whom having a hearing impairment?
Once
I heard about LBK Sahabat Bahasa who is giving a chance for disable to
study just like other normal kids, I knew I must join this course.
I
have a chance to teach IELTS for a brilliant deaf student. She is
remarkably intelligent. She shows me how deaf understand language and
communicate. I understand that it is very difficult for them to
communicate and understand in a normal and understandable way. Most of
the time, they need to put an extra effort to be in a conversation or
grasp information from a lecture.
As
a normal person, I could imagine how difficult it is to lose one of my
senses. But, my student, she shows me a great motivation to survive. To
get her dreams. To study further abroad. Which I know that's tough even
for those who have a complete sense.
There
are people out there just like her. Who have disability yet have a huge
dream. Their massive intention to learn somehow do not encouraged by
the availability of learning facilities and devoted educator.
As
a teacher, I knew that this world, these people need a place like LBK
Sabahat Bahasa and people just like teachers at LBK Sahabat Bahasa. We
need to help them. Keep inspired to jump as high as sky. To keep
learning and inspiring.
